Camp Horizon
Summer Camp

Help restore dignity and hope to Atlanta's youth in impacted by foster care.

What is Summer Camp?

Camp Horizon’s Summer Camp program is a cornerstone of our mission to restore dignity and hope to youth in foster care. Designed for youth ages 8-18 who have experienced abuse, neglect, and instability, the camp provides a safe and nurturing environment where participants can heal, grow, and develop the skills needed to thrive. The objectives of the Summer Camp program encompass emotional, social, physical, and educational development, creating a transformative experience that empowers foster youth to overcome challenges and build brighter futures.

How Camp Works:

Camp Horizon offers a transformative sleepaway experience through our partnership with Camp Twin Lakes at their campus in Rutledge, Georgia. Campers are paired with a dedicated, trauma-informed volunteer counselor (1:1 for ages 8-11, and 1:2 for ages 12-18). Our tech-free week is packed with a variety of engaging activities, from arts and crafts and social-emotional learning to outdoor adventures like swimming, kayaking, fishing, archery, and horseback riding. Campers build healthy connections, learn valuable life skills, and have fun in a supportive, natural environment.

Through trauma-informed care, mentorship, and enriching activities, the camp empowers youth to heal, grow, and envision a brighter future. With these objectives, Camp Horizon is committed to creating a transformative experience that leaves a lasting impact on the lives of foster youth.

Foster Emotional Well-Being and Resilience

One of the primary objectives of Summer Camp is to create a supportive environment where youth can address the emotional impact of trauma and instability. Camp Horizon aims to:

  • Provide trauma-informed care through trained mentors and staff who understand and address the unique emotional needs of foster youth.
  • Build self-esteem and confidence through activities that highlight individual strengths and celebrate achievements.
  • Foster emotional resilience by teaching coping strategies and providing a consistent, supportive presence.

Develop Social Skills and Build Positive Relationships

Foster youth frequently experience disruptions in their relationships due to multiple placements, which can hinder their ability to form healthy social connections. At Summer Camp, we aim to:

  • Encourage teamwork and communication through group activities such as team sports, collaborative games, and creative workshops.
  • Provide one-on-one mentoring to help youth build trust and form meaningful relationships with caring adults.
  • Create opportunities for peer bonding, allowing participants to form friendships in a safe, inclusive environment.

Promote Physical Health and Active Lifestyles

Physical activity is essential for both physical and mental health, and Camp Horizon integrates recreation into every aspect of the Summer Camp experience. Our objectives include:

  • Encouraging regular physical activity through outdoor adventures such as hiking, swimming, and team sports.
  • Educating youth on the importance of nutrition and healthy living through hands-on activities and nutritious meals.
  • Promoting physical wellness as a key component of overall well-being.

Provide Recreational Opportunities in a Safe Environment

For many foster youth, opportunities to simply “be a kid” are limited by their circumstances. Camp Horizon provides a space where children can enjoy carefree moments and discover new interests. Objectives include:

  • Offering diverse recreational activities such as arts and crafts, nature exploration, and talent shows to encourage self-expression and creativity.
  • Ensuring all activities are accessible and inclusive, allowing every camper to participate fully.
  • Creating a safe, structured environment where youth can explore new experiences without fear or judgment.

Cultivate Life Skills and Personal Growth

Summer Camp serves as a foundation for future success by teaching practical skills that foster youth can carry into adolescence and adulthood. Objectives include:

  • Encouraging personal responsibility and decision-making through age-appropriate activities and challenges.
  • Teaching conflict resolution and problem-solving skills through guided group discussions and exercises.
  • Promoting independence while reinforcing the importance of community and collaboration.

Provide Positive Role Models and Mentorship

The consistent presence of caring adults is a hallmark of Camp Horizon’s Summer Camp. Each camper is paired with a mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the week. Objectives include:

  • Establishing trust and connection between campers and their mentors to counteract the instability many foster youth experience.
  • Modeling positive behaviors and attitudes that inspire youth to adopt healthier perspectives and practices.
  • Offering mentorship that extends beyond the camp, ensuring youth continue to feel supported.

Address Educational and Developmental Gaps

Foster youth often face disruptions in their education due to frequent relocations and a lack of support. Camp Horizon incorporates educational elements into the Summer Camp experience to address these gaps. Objectives include:

  • Integrating hands-on learning opportunities that teach practical skills, such as nature-based science activities or financial literacy workshops.
  • Reinforcing critical thinking and problem-solving through engaging games and structured activities.
  • Supporting personal development through activities that encourage self-discovery and goal setting.

Create a Sense of Belonging and Community

Many foster youth feel disconnected due to their circumstances, and Camp Horizon strives to provide a sense of belonging that lasts long after Summer Camp ends. Objectives include:

  • Creating a welcoming, family-like atmosphere where youth feel accepted and valued.
  • Encouraging youth to support and uplift one another, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect.
  • Providing ongoing opportunities for connection through reunions and year-round programming.

Empower Youth to Break the Cycle of Adversity

Ultimately, the goal of Camp Horizon’s Summer Camp is to empower foster youth to overcome the challenges they face and build a brighter future. Objectives include:

  • Instilling a belief in their own potential and ability to succeed.
  • Providing tools and resources to help youth navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.
  • Encouraging participants to envision and pursue a positive future for themselves.

Foster Emotional Well-Being and Resilience

Summer Camp provides a supportive, trauma-informed environment where youth can begin to heal and grow. Through caring mentors, confidence-building activities, and consistent encouragement, Camp Horizon helps youth strengthen their self-esteem and develop the coping skills needed to build emotional resilience.

Develop Social Skills and Build Positive Relationships

Many foster youth experience disrupted relationships, making it hard to build trust. At Camp Horizon, we create opportunities for connection through teamwork, peer bonding, and mentoring—helping youth develop social skills and form positive, lasting relationships. These bonds model healthy behaviors, build trust, and often extend beyond camp, giving youth a steady source of encouragement and hope.

Promote Physical Health and Active Lifestyles

Physical activity and nature immersion are essential elements of the Camp Horizon experience. Through outdoor adventures, sports, and healthy living education, campers build strength, confidence, and wellness in a technology-free environment.

Provide Recreational Opportunities in a Safe Environment

For many foster youth, opportunities to simply enjoy childhood are limited. Camp Horizon offers a safe, inclusive space where youth can explore creativity, try new activities, and experience carefree moments while building confidence in a structured, supportive environment.

Cultivate Life Skills and Personal Growth

Summer Camp equips youth with practical skills that prepare them for life beyond camp. Through engaging activities, guided discussions, and collaborative challenges, campers learn decision-making, problem-solving, and independence.

Provide Positive Role Models and Mentorship

At its core, Camp Horizon’s mission is to inspire foster youth to believe in their potential and create brighter futures. By providing tools, resources, and unwavering support, we empower youth to overcome challenges, build resilience, and envision new possibilities for their lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Summer Camp or program participation cost?

$0.00! We work very hard to keep all of our programs free to participants. We rely on private donations and sponsorships in order to do this. Visit our donation page to learn about supporting Camp Horizon!

Are youth still eligible for programs if they’re no longer in foster care?

Participants must be currently in DFCS custody in order to join Camp Horizon programs, but once they are admitted they can continue program participation regardless of where their placement journey takes them (ie: reunification, adoption, kinship placement).

I have a foster youth between the ages of 8-10 years old. How do I sign them up?

Each year we intake youth during our summer camp enrollment period (March-May). New youth must be between 8-10 years old and currently in state custody. If you have specific questions about a camper's eligibility, please contact our program director by emailing courtney.lindner@camphorizon.net.
